The iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has resumed its popular toy train services from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Darjeeling, much to the delight of travelers and tourism stakeholders. This scenic 87 km journey, often considered the highlight of Darjeeling travel, was suspended on July 5, 2024, after a massive landslide damaged crucial railway tracks.
Revival of the Toy Train: Enhancing Darjeeling Tourism
The resumption of the toy train rides is expected to bring a surge in tourism in Darjeeling, a destination celebrated for its lush tea gardens, stunning mountain views, and colonial charm. Speaking about the restoration, Surinder Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Katihar, Northeast Frontier Railway, said:
“DHR toy train services are immensely popular among both domestic and international tourists. To ensure the highest safety standards, we conducted several trial runs before reopening the service. Additionally, three new engines will soon be introduced to increase the frequency of these services, enhancing the overall travel experience in Darjeeling.”
A UNESCO World Heritage Marvel
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 5, 1999. This recognition celebrates its role as a pioneering example of how innovative transportation systems have positively impacted the social and economic development of multicultural regions.
An official statement noted:
